Nominal vs. Actual Size |

|
If you are a do-it-yourselfer, you will learn quickly that when buying tile, a 6"x 6" tile is not actually 6 inches in width and 6 inches in height. Individual tiles are often sold using dimensions that describe their installed size, or, the size of the tile plus a standard grout joint. Thus, 6x6 inch tiles measure 1/8 inch shorter in each direction. The actual size of the tile will be 5 7/8 x 5 7/8 inches. When installed with a 1/8 inch grout joint, the installed size of the tile will be about 6x6 inches. Always check the actual size of the tiles before purchasing them.
