The idea was to tie the structure to its architectural origins, says Donna Hochberg of the 1790 post-and-beam Federal-style home in North Reading she bought in 2009. "I wanted to preserve and protect its history, to bring rooms back to what is historically appropriate."   A succession of owners had undertaken unsympathetic renovations and additions, so restoring the house's integrity was an ambitious project.
